Most business owners set goals in January and abandon them by March.
Not because they lack ambition. Not because the goals were wrong. But because the way they set goals almost guarantees failure.
Vague goals with no deadline, no measurement and no plan for what to do when things go wrong are not goals. They are wishes. And wishes do not build businesses.
This guide shows you how to set business goals for 2027 that are specific enough to pursue, measurable enough to track and connected enough to your weekly work that you actually make progress on them every week.
Why Most Business Goals Fail
Before we get into how to set goals properly, it is worth understanding why most goals fail. There are four reasons:
They are too vague. "Grow my business" is not a goal. "Reach £8,000 per month in revenue by September 2027" is a goal. Vague goals cannot be pursued because you never know whether you are making progress.
There are too many of them. A list of ten goals is not a plan, it is a wish list. When everything is a priority nothing is. The business owners who make the most progress set three to five goals maximum and give those goals genuine focus.
They are not connected to your weekly work. A goal that lives in your planner but never appears in your weekly planning is a goal that will not get done. Your annual goals need to show up in your monthly priorities and your monthly priorities need to show up in your weekly plans.
There is no review habit. Goals without a regular review fall out of sight and out of mind. A monthly review where you check progress, celebrate wins and adjust your approach is what keeps goals alive all year.
Step 1: Review the Year Just Gone
Before you set goals for 2027 you need to understand what happened in 2026.
This is not an exercise in self criticism. It is an honest assessment of what worked, what did not and why.
Ask yourself:
What did you achieve that you are genuinely proud of?
What did you plan to do that did not happen, and why?
What were your biggest lessons from the year?
What do you want more of in 2027? Less of?
What did your numbers look like? Revenue, expenses, profit, customers?
Write the answers down. Not in your head. On the page. The act of writing makes the reflection real and the intentions stick.
The MY PA Business Planner 2027 has a dedicated year review section at the front for exactly this purpose. If you are setting goals without a planner, use a notebook and give this step at least 30 minutes.
Step 2: Set Your Vision for the Year
Before you write a single goal, get clear on what you actually want 2027 to look like.
Not just in your business. In your life.
What days will you work? What hours? How much will you take from the business? What will you do with your time outside work? What does success look and feel like to you by December 2027?
This matters because your business exists to fund and support your life. If you set business goals without first deciding what kind of life you want, you risk building something that makes you busy but not happy.
Spend time on this. It changes the goals you choose.
Step 3: Choose Three to Five Goals Maximum
Now you are ready to set your goals for 2027.
The rule is simple: three to five goals maximum. Not ten. Not seven. Three to five.
More than five goals means none get proper focus. You end up spreading your energy across too many things and making slow progress on everything rather than fast progress on what matters most.
Your goals should cover the areas that will make the biggest difference to your business this year. For most small business owners that means some combination of:
Revenue and financial targets
New products, services or offers
Marketing and audience growth
Systems and operations
Personal development or skills
You do not need a goal in every category. Choose the areas where focus will make the biggest difference this year.
Step 4: Make Every Goal Specific and Measurable
Every goal needs four things:
A specific outcome. Not "grow my revenue" but "reach £8,000 per month in recurring revenue."
A number. If you cannot measure it you cannot track it. Every goal needs a metric.
A deadline. "By September 2027" not "this year." A deadline creates urgency and helps you work backwards to plan what needs to happen when.
A definition of success. What does achieving this goal actually look like? Be precise.
Examples of weak goals vs strong goals:
Weak goalStrong goalGrow my businessReach £8,000 per month revenue by September 2027Get more clientsSign 5 new retainer clients by June 2027Improve my marketingGrow email list from 500 to 2,000 subscribers by December 2027Launch a new productLaunch digital course by April 2027 generating £5,000 in first monthBe less stressedWork no more than 4 days per week from March 2027
Notice that every strong goal has a number and a date. That is what makes it pursuable.
Step 5: Break Each Goal Into Quarterly Milestones
A year is a long time. Too long to plan in one go.
Once you have your three to five annual goals, break each one into four quarterly milestones. What needs to be true by the end of March for you to be on track? By June? By September?
Example:
Annual goal: Reach £8,000 per month revenue by September 2027
Q1 milestone (March): Reach £5,000 per month
Q2 milestone (June): Reach £6,500 per month
Q3 milestone (September): Reach £8,000 per month
Q4 milestone (December): Maintain £8,000 per month and build systems to sustain it
Now you know exactly what you are working towards each quarter. And if you reach March and you are at £3,500 per month instead of £5,000, you know immediately that something needs to change.
Step 6: Connect Your Goals to Monthly and Weekly Planning
This is the step most people miss and it is the most important one.
Your annual goals need to show up in your monthly priorities. Your monthly priorities need to show up in your weekly plans. Your weekly plans need to show up in your daily work.
Without this connection your goals are just words on a page.
In the MY PA Business Planner 2027 this connection is built into the system. The goals section at the front flows into the monthly goals and actions pages, which flow into the weekly spreads. Your annual intentions become your weekly work automatically if you use the system properly.

Step 7: Build a Monthly Review Habit
Setting goals is only the beginning. Reviewing them is what makes the difference.
At the end of every month, spend 30 minutes reviewing your goals:
What progress did you make this month?
Are you on track for your quarterly milestone?
What worked? What did not?
What do you need to do differently next month?
What are your three priorities for next month?
This monthly review habit is what keeps your goals alive all year and gives you the opportunity to adjust your approach before you get too far off track.

The One Thing That Makes Goal Setting Work
Everything in this guide matters. The specificity, the milestones, the monthly review.
But if there is one thing that makes goal setting actually work it is this: write your goals down and look at them every week.
Not every month. Every week. When you sit down on Sunday evening to plan your week, your goals should be visible. They should inform what you choose to work on. They should remind you what matters.
The MY PA Business Planner 2027 is designed to make this automatic. Your goals live at the front. Your weekly planning happens in the weekly spreads. The system keeps them connected.
